CI and NE particles

They indicate place and quantity respectively. But not only that! These particles are particular and indicate 'complements'. The particle 'NE' indicates a number of things but is also used with pronominal verbs to change the meaning of the verb. The particle 'CI', on the other hand, has many uses because it can indicate a place or it can be a complement pronoun, or it can be part of a reflexive verb. For example, I can say, 'noi CI SVEGLIAMO sempre alle 9.00 a.m.'

The CI PARTICLE in Italian has many functions and is used: 1) with LOCATIVE VALUE, 2) in certain EXPRESSIONS, 3) as a COMPLEMENT, 4) as a PRONOUN. For example in the sentence: 'ci vediamo domani' the particle CI is a reflexive pronoun. In the sentence: 'ci vuole un miracolo', CI is part of an expression. Again, in the sentence 'oggi ci telefona', CI is a complement while in the sentence 'non ci capisco niente' the particle CI is PLEONASTIC, that is, it is not necessary. Finally, in the sentence 'ci sono 10 libri', the particle CI means 'there' and replaces an adverb of place (LOCATIVE VALUE).

The CI particle is INVARIABLE, and is normally found before the verb. But its POSITION depends on certain elements in the sentence. Take a look at this image to understand!

In addition to having various uses, the CI PARTICLE also forms expressions that are widely used in spoken language, which do not make much sense logically. For example, we can say:

  • CI MANGIANO! - A situation where someone has a lot of power and therefore takes advantage of this privileged status.
  • A casa nostra ci laviamo sempre con sapone biologico perché è sano.
  • Basta! Corriamo da 2 ore, non ce la faccio più.
  • C'erano tante conchiglie al mare e io ne ho preso un paio.
  • Ci beviamo una bella birra stasera? Ne ho bisogno per svagarmi.
  • Ci hai parlato con Maria? Guarda che lei ti vuole bene.
  • Ci prendiamo un bel caffè? Oggi non mi va di fare niente.
  • Ci sono molti quadri in questa mostra, ma ne prendo solo uno.
  • Ci sono tante persone che si impegnano ad aiutare gli altri.
