DESINENCE is the final element of a word and it changes. It is therefore said to be a VARIABLE PART of the speech. The ROOT, on the other hand, is the initial part of the word and does not change, so it is INVARIABLE. Both are MORPHEMES, and the morpheme is the minimal part of a word, and each part has a meaning.
Regarding the ROOT, it is important to understand that it is the part that determines the meaning of the word, and therefore refers back to the origin of the word (ETHYMOLOGY).
