Cosa vuol dire
The verb ESSERE is used to express long-lasting states, for example we can say: 'oggi sono felice. The verb AVERE is used to indicate possession, in fact we say: 'ho una maglietta fantastica'. They are also called AUXILIARY because they help other verbs to form COMPOSITE TIMES.
The verb ESSERE is particular in Italian because it can also have the function of 'còpula'. That is, it can 'join' the subject to something that describes the same subject. In this case 'essere' is not independent and to make sense, the speaker has to say the whole sentence. For example, if I say, 'il professore è', it doesn't make sense. I have to finish the sentence and say, 'il professore è bravo'. This is referred to as a NOMINAL PREDICT. Here are some examples:
