Adjective

Something that enriches the noun with information. Adjectives are many in Italian, and the largest group is those that give qualitative information, as for example in the sentence, 'Maria è intelligente,' I give a quality to Maria. But adjectives can also indicate possession (e.g. il MIO computer), or closeness to the speaker (e.g. QUESTO computer) or they can also indicate the number of these objects (e.g. TRE computer). In any case, all adjectives ALWAYS refer to the noun!

QUALIFICATIVE ADJECTIVES, describe the noun and add characteristics. They answer the question: what is the object like? For example, we can say: 'la pèntola è BUCATA'.

The qualifying adjective agrees by GENRE and NUMBER, but this also depends on the classes. To figure out the class you need to see the last letter of the adjective. Here is an image that explains the concept:

QUALIFYING ADJECTIVES are formed with the help of SUFFIXES, just as happens with the noun. There are many suffixes such as: -OS-, -ENT-, -AL-, -EVOL-, -IV-, and others. Here are some examples:

  • 'PERICOLOSO': is formed from the noun 'pericolo'. So you can say: 'è una strada pericolosa'.
  • È facile fare un caffè. Hai bisogno solo di una buona moka.
  • Finalmente arriva il periodo estivo. Sono stanco del freddo.
  • Il tuo atteggiamento è offensivo. Non devi parlare di me quando non ci sono.
  • Non va bene essere così bugiardo!
  • Oggi compri la tua prima macchina. Sei contento?
  • Questo commesso è inesperto e impacciato.
  • Questo computer è mostruoso, è una scheggia!
  • Sei molto socievole, Antonio. È una cosa che apprezzo.

  • abituàre (v. tr. -> abìtuo - ho abituato - abituavo) (invar.)
